What P07F6 means

A ratio code compares input or turbine speed divided by output speed with the ratio of the commanded gear; a slipping clutch or the wrong gear trips it.

How the engine computer detects it

Ford's summaries describe the check (over 30 rpm off for more than 1.8 s, three times) for gears 1–6 only; its 10-speed bulletins show gears 7–10 as P076F, P07D9, P07F6 and P07F7. P07F6 covers 9th gear. Ford's 10R80 bulletins from 2023 to 2025 (F-150, Mustang, Ranger, Explorer, Transit, Expedition) list it with the other ratio codes; the causes are adaptive learning, the valve body and a migrating clutch cylinder sleeve. The 10R140 bulletin of 2021 does not mention it. Nissan's nine-speed Frontier and Titan set it with the MIL on; the repair check drives each gear 1–9 for at least 10 s in manual mode.

Symptoms

  • Slipping or flaring engine speed in gear 9
  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Check engine or transmission warning lamp
  • Gear 9 locked out, higher rpm at cruise

Common causes

  1. Clutch slipping or hydraulic leak (Ford 10R: migrating sleeve in the CDF clutch cylinder) Most likely
  2. Shift adaptives wrong or not learned Most likely
  3. Sticking valve in the valve body Possible
  4. Fluid level low or fluid degraded Possible
  5. Turbine or output speed sensor signal wrong Less likely

How to diagnose P07F6

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: transmission clutches, transmission valve body, transmission fluid, transmission control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P07F6?

If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P07F6?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
