What P0730 means

The transmission computer compares how fast the engine side and the wheel side of the transmission are turning, and the numbers don't match the gear it expects. In plain terms, the transmission is slipping or sitting in the wrong gear. Low or worn fluid is the first thing to rule out; a sticking shift solenoid or internal wear are the other usual causes.

How the engine computer detects it

P0730 reports a wrong transmission ratio without assigning it to a gear. Two uses are documented. Older Aisin-type automatics (a 2006 GM table, Saab's 9-5 of 2002) set it when fourth or fifth gear shows the ratio of third – a shift solenoid (Saab: S3) is not switching; GM lights the MIL at once, Saab enters limp mode. GM's continuously variable transmissions of 2023 and 2025 use it when the pulleys do not reach the commanded variator ratio – the belt or chain slips or clamping pressure is too low – after one trip. Ford and newer GM step automatics use gear-specific or clutch valve codes instead. Check fluid level and condition first.

Symptoms

  • Slipping, engine speed rises without drive
  • Wrong gear or missing upper gears, limp mode
  • Check engine light (GM) or transmission warning
  • CVT: judder, weak acceleration

Common causes

  1. Fluid level or quality (CVT fluid or ATF) Most likely
  2. Shift solenoid or pressure control valve sticking or faulty Most likely
  3. Clutch or brake wear, or worn variator belt, chain or pulleys Possible
  4. Faulty speed sensor signal Less likely

How to diagnose P0730

  1. Check the transmission fluid level and condition as your owner's manual describes. Low, dark or burnt-smelling fluid needs attention first.
  2. Have the transmission module read with a scanner that supports it. P0730 doesn't say which gear slips, but other stored codes often do.
  3. Fix any speed sensor codes first. A bad speed signal can make a healthy transmission look like it's slipping.
  4. Ask about service bulletins, software updates and extended warranty coverage for your transmission.
  5. A shop can road test with a scanner to see which gear or ratio slips and whether a solenoid, the valve body or internal wear is to blame.
  6. If clutches or a CVT belt are worn, the transmission needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0730 (82 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0730?

If the engine revs without the car speeding up, or the transmission is stuck in one gear, stop driving and have it towed: slipping does more damage the longer you drive. If it seems to shift normally, drive gently and only as far as a shop.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0730?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Often reported together

Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P0730. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
