What P07E4 means

With shift-by-wire or park-by-wire, P, R, N and D are requested electrically (buttons, rotary selector, automatic park on shutdown) and an actuator moves the selector shaft or the park pawl; the module compares the requested with the range actually reached.

How the engine computer detects it

P07E4 means park is not reached or not held within the allowed time. GM gives thresholds: 2 s in 2018 tables and the ICCM of its electronic range selector (2000 ms), 6–10 s in later tables, type B with the MIL after two trips; a 2018 bulletin for LaCrosse and XT5 blames a misaligned coupling of the range control module. Ford sets it with the wrench lamp instead of the MIL – on the 2020 Escape and Corsair a misrouted park release cable, on the Mach-E software – and applies the electric parking brake. Ram 1500 (2019) sets the MIL; Stellantis names a used manual park release as the most common cause.

Symptoms

  • Park cannot be selected, 'Park not available' message
  • Electric parking brake applies automatically
  • Wrench lamp (Ford) or MIL (GM, Ram)
  • Vehicle may roll away if not secured

Common causes

  1. Manual park release cable misrouted or actuated Most likely
  2. Range actuator misaligned or its coupling offset Possible
  3. Control module software Possible
  4. Park lock actuator or its ground faulty Possible
  5. Range or park position signal wrong Less likely

How to diagnose P07E4

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: park lock actuator, park position sensor, electronic range selector, transmission control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P07E4?

If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P07E4?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P07E4 clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
