What P07E5 means

With shift-by-wire or park-by-wire, P, R, N and D are requested electrically (buttons, rotary selector, automatic park on shutdown) and an actuator moves the selector shaft or the park pawl; the module compares the requested with the range actually reached.

How the engine computer detects it

P07E5 means drive is requested but not reached in time. Only GM documents it: its electronic range selector (LaCrosse, XT5, XT4, 2025 Equinox and Terrain) allows 10 s in most tables, 3 s in the 2018 Diesel table and 2000 ms in the selector module, type B with the MIL after two trips. A 2018 bulletin blames a misaligned range control module coupling, its 2019 revision adds ratio codes; on the 2025 Equinox and Terrain it can appear after an over-the-air update and clears after a ten-minute rest. The car does not move forward or falls back to neutral.

Symptoms

  • No drive in D
  • 'Service Transmission' message, MIL
  • Range falls back to N or P

Common causes

  1. Range control actuator misaligned or faulty Most likely
  2. Software or after-effect of an over-the-air update Possible
  3. Range sensor signal wrong Possible
  4. Forward clutch or line pressure missing Less likely

How to diagnose P07E5

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: transmission range selector, transmission range sensor, electronic range selector, transmission control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P07E5?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P07E5?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P07E5 clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
