What P07E7 means
With shift-by-wire or park-by-wire, P, R, N and D are requested electrically (buttons, rotary selector, automatic park on shutdown) and an actuator moves the selector shaft or the park pawl; the module compares the requested with the range actually reached.
How the engine computer detects it
P07E7 means drive cannot be left: after a request for P, N or R the transmission stays in D. It is the counterpart to P07E5, where drive cannot be engaged, and to P07E6 for park. No manufacturer document available to us uses it; GM's range selector module checks requested against reached range in the same way for P07E4 and P07E5 (2000 ms, two trips). With shift-by-wire the fault matters for safety, because the car cannot be put into park or neutral. Typical causes would be a sticking range actuator or selector shaft, a range sensor wrongly reporting D, or the selector or its software.

Symptoms
- Range stays in D despite the selector request
- P or N cannot be reached, warning message
- Warning lamp (depends on manufacturer)
Common causes
- Range actuator or selector shaft sticking Possible
- Range sensor wrongly reporting D Possible
- Selector sensor or software Less likely
How to diagnose P07E7
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: transmission range selector, transmission range sensor, electronic range selector, transmission control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P07E7?
Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P07E7?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P07E7 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
