What P0752 means

A shift solenoid is an electrically switched valve in the valve body; together the solenoid states select the gear, and the module checks the result by gear ratio, slip or a pressure switch – the pattern of wrong gears shows which solenoid hangs off or on.

How the engine computer detects it

P0752 means solenoid A is commanded off but its clutch stays applied. GM's 6T70 flags slip of 400 rpm for 2 s five times after one trip and then runs only reverse, first and third with maximum pressure; GM's T43 a ratio of 3.83–4.23 (first instead of fourth); GM 4-speeds the pattern 1-1-4-4 after two trips; Allison its pressure switch after 2 s. Ford calls it 'functionally failed on'. A clutch that does not release can tie up the transmission.

Symptoms

  • Wrong, often too low gear, engine revs high
  • Tie-up or jolt on shifts
  • Limp mode (GM: reverse, 1st, 3rd only)
  • Check engine light

Common causes

  1. Shift spool sticking in the applied position Most likely
  2. Solenoid stuck open or leaking Possible
  3. Clutch not releasing (burnt or stuck) Possible
  4. Contaminated or wrong fluid Possible

How to diagnose P0752

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: shift solenoid, transmission valve body, transmission wiring, transmission control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0752?

If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0752?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Often reported together

Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P0752. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
