What P0751 means
A shift solenoid is an electrically switched valve in the valve body; together the solenoid states select the gear, and the module checks the result by gear ratio, slip or a pressure switch – the pattern of wrong gears shows which solenoid hangs off or on.
How the engine computer detects it
P0751 means solenoid A is commanded on but valve, clutch or gear do not follow. GM's 6T70 flags a ratio of 1.34–1.48 with slip of 400 rpm for 0.3 s eight times and locks out first gear; GM 4-speeds recognize the pattern 2-2-3-3; both after two trips. Allison checks its pressure switch for 5 s after one trip. Ford's 'functionally failed off' covers the whole clutch circuit, and its 10R80 and 8F35 bulletins show purely mechanical causes such as a leaking clutch cylinder.

Symptoms
- Gears missing or skipped
- Pulling away in the wrong gear, weak acceleration
- Limp mode or gear lock-out
- Check engine light
Common causes
- Shift spool in the valve body sticking (dirt, debris) Most likely
- Internal leak or clutch fault in the circuit Possible
- Solenoid mechanically sluggish or screen clogged Possible
- Fluid level or quality wrong Possible
How to diagnose P0751
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: shift solenoid, transmission valve body, transmission wiring, transmission control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0751?
If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0751?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P0751 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
Often reported together
Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P0751. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
