What P0758 means
A shift solenoid is an electrically switched valve in the valve body.
How the engine computer detects it
Manufacturers use these codes differently: Ford reports an open circuit with the base code and shorts separately, newer GM units have separate low/high codes, and the letter is not tied to a valve number (Saab's 9-5: A = valve S2). P0758 is the collective electrical code for solenoid B. GM's older 4-speeds flag open or short to ground at more than 43 of 50 failed counts; Subaru compares the driver transistor voltage for 30 ms, lights the MIL after two trips and holds third gear; on Saab's 5-speed Aisin box B is valve S3, checked by current; Hyundai's 8-speed uses it for the proportional valve of the 2-6 brake. Ford and newer GM do not use P0758.

Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning lamp
- Limp mode in a fixed gear, no upshifts
- Harsh shifts from maximum line pressure
Common causes
- Open or corroded wire or transmission pass-through connector Most likely
- Solenoid coil open or shorted Possible
- Internal harness or electronic module in the transmission Possible
- Module driver faulty or valve supply missing Less likely
How to diagnose P0758
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: shift solenoid, transmission valve body, transmission wiring, transmission control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0758 (12 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0758?
If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0758?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P0758 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
