What P061B means
The engine computer runs a second, independent check of how much power the engine should be making, and the two answers don't agree. As a safety measure it may limit power. Most often it's a software problem that a dealer update fixes, but low voltage or a dirty throttle body can also set it.
How the engine computer detects it
Electronic throttle systems run a second, independent calculation on the same processor (level 2, at Ford 'IPC – independent plausibility check') that recomputes driver demand, permitted and actual torque and their inputs, and compares them with the main software. P061B means the torque calculation itself is inconsistent: main software and monitoring compute the torque differently. On Ford gasoline engines it sets within 1 s with the check engine and wrench lamps and blocks the catalyst monitor. On Ford's 2023 diesel torque equals injected fuel, so P061B checks the injection control instead – energizing times outside 10–850 ms, more than 127.2 µs between programmed and actual, or more than 5 mg difference in quantity correction (5 s). Software updates fixed it on Chrysler's 3.0 L EcoDiesel and the Ram 6.7 L Cummins; on the Ford Five Hundred it came with idle codes and a dirty throttle body.

Symptoms
- Check engine light and wrench lamp
- Reduced power or limp mode
- Fluctuating idle (Ford gasoline with dirty throttle)
- Sometimes only the lamp
Common causes
- Engine module software or calibration fault (update available) Most likely
- Dirty throttle or air path, idle adaptation at its limit (gasoline) Possible
- Voltage dips, poor ground or supply at the module Possible
- Injector quantity deviation pushing the zero-fuel calibration out of range (diesel) Less likely
- Internal defect of the engine module Less likely
How to diagnose P061B
- Have the battery and charging system tested, and clean and tighten the battery terminals and engine ground straps. Voltage dips can upset the engine computer's checks.
- Look for other codes, such as idle, throttle or voltage codes. They often point to the real cause.
- Look up service bulletins and software updates for your engine computer. Software updates resolve some P061B cases and usually need a dealer or a shop with programming tools.
- On gasoline engines with an unsteady idle, with the ignition off, inspect and clean the throttle body. Some cars need an idle relearn afterwards.
- Replacing the engine computer is a last resort. A new one must be programmed to the car, usually by a dealer or a shop with programming tools.
Vehicles that report P061B most
| Vehicle | Years | Reports | Share | Median miles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Freestyle | 2005–2007 | 23 | 83k | |
| Ford Five Hundred | 2005–2006 | 3 | 100k |
Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P061B (41 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P061B?
Drive gently and only as far as you need to, such as to a shop. The car can drop into reduced-power mode without warning, so avoid highways and fast traffic until it's fixed. If the engine stalls or barely accelerates, have it towed.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P061B?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Often reported together
Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P061B. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
