What P0614 means
P0614 means the software or calibration variant of the engine module does not match the fitted transmission module or transmission type, or the transmission module is not registered.
How the engine computer detects it
CARB allows modules with several calibration variants (for example manual and automatic) to share one calibration ID only if a wrong variant turns on the lamp – exactly this check. GM's V6 engines (Saab 9-5 2010) run it continuously with ignition on and light the lamp in the first trip, also for incomplete programming; Saab's Bosch ME9 sets it when a wrong variant is programmed, without any other system reaction. Typical cases are a used module from a car with a different transmission or a software update applied to only one of the two modules.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possibly transmission limp mode or limited shifting
- Sometimes no other symptoms
Common causes
- Engine or transmission module replaced and not matched or registered Most likely
- Used module with the wrong variant (different transmission or engine) Possible
- Software update on only one of the two modules Possible
- Internal engine module fault Less likely
How to diagnose P0614
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: engine control module, transmission control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0614?
Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0614?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
