What P0613 means

P0613 reports an internal processor or calculation fault in the transmission control module.

How the engine computer detects it

It is usually set by the transmission module itself – the scan tool shows which module stored it; on some architectures the engine module reports it on the transmission module's behalf. The only manufacturer document found is Subaru's bulletin for the 2022 BRZ 2.4 L automatic: an internal plausibility check (a calculated gear ratio) set P0613 falsely in rare cases, and the fix was reprogramming the transmission module with improved self-diagnosis. Depending on the maker the transmission may go into limp mode with a fixed gear and harsh shifts. Check supply, ground and battery first, then look for a software update. The engine module's processor fault is P0606; an ECM/TCM mismatch is P0614.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or transmission warning
  • Transmission limp mode (fixed gear, harsh shifts)
  • Implausible shifting
  • Often no noticeable symptoms (sporadic false report)

Common causes

  1. Transmission module software (self-diagnosis triggers falsely) Most likely
  2. Voltage dip, poor ground or supply at the transmission module Possible
  3. Interrupted or faulty programming Possible
  4. Internal hardware defect (moisture, overheating) Less likely

How to diagnose P0613

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: transmission control module, control module power supply.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0613?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0613?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
