What P050B means
After a cold start the engine module raises idle speed and air mass and retards the ignition so that much heat goes into the exhaust and the catalyst lights off quickly.
How the engine computer detects it
CARB requires this cold-start strategy to be monitored with its own codes, separate from ordinary idle and ignition faults. Ford collects data during the first 15 s after a cold start (coolant and catalyst 20–100 °F) and judges after 300 s, once per trip. P050B checks the ignition part of the strategy – the retard for catalyst heating; CARB allows checking only the commanded value. Ford sets it when desired and commanded cold-start timing differ by more than 10°, for example because knock, torque or idle control take back the retard. FCA fixed P050B on the 2.0-liter turbo Wrangler of 2018–19 with software. GM has no separate monitor.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Usually no noticeable symptoms
- Catalyst warms up more slowly after a cold start
Common causes
- Engine module software or calibration Most likely
- Idle control takes back the retard because speed would drop (false air, dirty throttle) Possible
- Knock control or knock sensor intervenes Less likely
- Extra load or alternator at cold start Less likely
How to diagnose P050B
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: ignition timing control, cold start strategy, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P050B?
Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P050B?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P050B clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
