What P0501 means
The vehicle speed signal A comes, depending on the maker, from a sensor on the transmission, the transmission output speed, the wheel speeds via ABS/ESP or a CAN message; CARB explicitly names it as an input to be monitored.
How the engine computer detects it
P0501 means the signal is present but does not fit the driving state or lies outside the physically possible range. Saab's Trionic T5 sets it above 270 km/h (168 mph); other makers typically compare it with engine speed times gear ratio, wheel speeds or the transmission output speed. GM's 2018 tables and Ford do not use P0501 (GM: P0503, Ford: P0500). Cruise control is then disabled.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Speedometer dead or jumping
- Cruise control not working
- Automatic shifts harshly or wrongly
Common causes
- Wheel speed sensor or tone ring damaged or dirty (ABS source) Most likely
- Wrong tire size, axle ratio or coding Possible
- Sensor with weak signal or damaged tone wheel Possible
- Interference from damaged shielding or ground Less likely
How to diagnose P0501
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: vehicle speed sensor, abs module, sensor wiring, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0501?
Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0501?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P0501 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
Can I fix P0501 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
