What P0503 means
The vehicle speed signal A comes, depending on the maker, from a sensor on the transmission, the transmission output speed, the wheel speeds via ABS/ESP or a CAN message; CARB explicitly names it as an input to be monitored.
How the engine computer detects it
P0503 combines three fault patterns: sporadic signal loss, jumping values and a value that is too high. GM detects a sudden signal drop quickly (0.3 s, 5 counts, MIL on the first trip); Subaru sets it at 240 km/h (149 mph) or more for a cumulative 4 s, Saab's diesel above 220 km/h (137 mph). In limp mode Subaru sets the speed to zero, disables fuel cut-off on overrun and raises the fan.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Speedometer needle jumps
- Cruise control drops out, jerky shifting
Common causes
- Loose contact, chafed wire, corroded connector Most likely
- Interference from damaged shielding or the ignition Possible
- Sensor with weakened magnet or damaged tone wheel Possible
- ABS/ESP fault (signal source) Less likely
How to diagnose P0503
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: vehicle speed sensor, abs module, sensor wiring, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.
Reading the code

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0503?
Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0503?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Can I fix P0503 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
