What P0502 means

The vehicle speed signal A comes, depending on the maker, from a sensor on the transmission, the transmission output speed, the wheel speeds via ABS/ESP or a CAN message; CARB explicitly names it as an input to be monitored.

How the engine computer detects it

Despite its wording, all makers found check plausibility: the car is clearly moving (load, torque, overrun), yet the signal stays at zero. GM's 2018 tables use the transmission output speed: below 12 rpm (gasoline) or 60 rpm (diesel) for 4.5 s, MIL on the first trip. Subaru (also in the Saab 9-2X) sets it below 1 km/h (1 mph) on overrun for over 4 s with the MIL at once; Saab's T5 after 4 s without signal above 1800 rpm. Electrical faults give the same picture.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Speedometer dead or jumping
  • Cruise control not working
  • Automatic shifts harshly or wrongly

Common causes

  1. Speed or output speed sensor faulty Most likely
  2. Wire open or shorted to ground, connector corroded Most likely
  3. ABS module sends no speed signal Possible
  4. Tone wheel damaged or sensor dirty Less likely

How to diagnose P0502

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: vehicle speed sensor, abs module, sensor wiring, engine control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0502?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0502?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Can I fix P0502 myself?

Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
