What P0297 means
P0297 is a condition code: the engine module detects that road speed – from the vehicle speed sensor or wheel and output shaft speed – exceeded the calibrated maximum.
How the engine computer detects it
Electronic speed limiters cut fuel or throttle at that limit, and the event is stored. Ford uses the code on its gasoline trucks and stores it without the warning light; no manufacturer publishes a threshold. Common triggers are descending with a trailer beyond the limiter speed, wheelspin on the driven axle, a wrongly programmed tire size or axle ratio, or spikes in the speed signal. Unlike P0219 it concerns road speed, not engine speed.

Symptoms
- Usually no warning light, code only stored
- Vehicle limits speed at its maximum
- With a disturbed signal: jumping speedometer, odd shifting
Common causes
- Limiter speed genuinely exceeded (downhill, trailer) Most likely
- Wrong tire size or axle ratio programmed, larger wheels fitted Possible
- Wheelspin on the driven axle Possible
- Speed signal disturbed (loose contact, interference, tone wheel) Less likely
How to diagnose P0297
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: vehicle speed sensor, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0297?
Usually yes, if the engine runs normally now. The code records that the engine went past its safe rpm limit, for example after a missed downshift. If you hear knocking, see smoke or the engine runs rough, stop: over-revving can damage valves and pistons.
Can I fix P0297 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: easy. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
