What P0219 means
P0219 is a condition code: engine speed has exceeded the overspeed limit even though the rev limiter already cuts fuel – so the engine was driven from outside, usually by downshifting at too high a road speed or descending in too low a gear, or the speed signal was wrong.
How the engine computer detects it
Limits: Ford 6.7 liter diesel above 4,200 rpm, 3.0 liter above 4,800 rpm, after 0.1 s; GM/Saab 2.8 V6 gasoline with manual transmission above 7,000 rpm for 1 s; Saab 2.2 diesel above 6,200 rpm, although fuel is cut from 5,000 rpm. Many manufacturers store it without the warning light. Saab advises: together with a camshaft sensor code it was real overspeed, alone check the speed signal; after real overspeed inspect the engine for valve train damage.

Symptoms
- Usually no lasting symptoms, only a stored code
- Briefly very high revs, limiter intervening
- Check engine light possible (manufacturer-dependent)
- After real overspeed: rattling, loss of power
Common causes
- Downshift at too high a road speed (manual transmission) Most likely
- Descending in too low a gear Possible
- Fault in the speed signal (crankshaft sensor, wiring) Less likely
- Diesel runaway (oil drawn into the intake) or sticking injection Less likely
How to diagnose P0219
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: engine, crankshaft position sensor, manual transmission.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0219 (13 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0219?
Usually yes, if the engine runs normally now. The code records that the engine went past its safe rpm limit, for example after a missed downshift. If you hear knocking, see smoke or the engine runs rough, stop: over-revving can damage valves and pistons.
Can I fix P0219 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: easy. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
