What P0A65 means
P0A65 reports overcurrent in phase W of drive motor A.
How the engine computer detects it
It is the third phase code in Hyundai bulletin 17-01-057-1 for the 2017 Ioniq Hybrid, campaign T2J: with an internal coolant leak in the traction motor, P0A65, P0A5F or P0A62 set with Check Engine and hybrid lights, often joined by the isolation fault P0AA6. Reduced power when accelerating and a non-working air conditioner followed. The fix path is the scan tool isolation test, a coolant inspection of the motor and, if confirmed, a new traction motor. In general, a W-phase winding short or a pinched cable has the same effect. Hyundai inverters measure two phases and calculate the third, per a Hyundai patent. P0A64 is the low side, P0A63 the general W code, P0A5F and P0A62 phases U and V.

Symptoms
- Check Engine and hybrid warning lights
- Reduced power when accelerating
- Air conditioning inoperative (Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid)
Common causes
- Internal coolant leak in the traction motor (Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid) Most likely
- Phase W lead or winding shorted to ground or to another phase Possible
- Inverter power stage fault in phase W Possible
- Current sensor falsely reporting overcurrent Less likely
How to diagnose P0A65
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: drive motor a phase w, inverter.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0A65?
If the car drives normally, drive gently to a shop that services hybrids. If it shows a hybrid system warning, loses power or won't go into Ready, pull over and have it towed. Never touch orange high-voltage cables.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0A65?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
