What P0A5F means
P0A5F reports excessive current in phase U of drive motor A, a condition the inverter treats as overcurrent.
How the engine computer detects it
Hyundai documents it on the 2017 Ioniq Hybrid (bulletin 17-01-057-1, campaign T2J): coolant leaking inside the traction motor set the Check Engine and hybrid lights with P0A5F, P0A62 or P0A65, often together with the isolation fault P0AA6; drivers noticed weak acceleration and a dead air conditioner. The procedure runs an insulation breakdown test with the scan tool and replaces the motor if it fails. A Hyundai patent shows such inverters measure two phases and calculate the third. P0A5E is the low side, P0A5D the general U code, P0A62 and P0A65 the same overcurrent on V and W.

Symptoms
- Check Engine and hybrid warning lights
- Reduced power when accelerating
- Air conditioning inoperative (Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid)
Common causes
- Internal coolant leak in the traction motor causing insulation breakdown (Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid) Most likely
- Shorted winding or phase lead of drive motor A Possible
- Inverter power stage fault in phase U Possible
- Current sensor falsely reporting overcurrent Less likely
How to diagnose P0A5F
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: drive motor a phase u, inverter.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0A5F?
If the car drives normally, drive gently to a shop that services hybrids. If it shows a hybrid system warning, loses power or won't go into Ready, pull over and have it towed. Never touch orange high-voltage cables.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0A5F?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
