What P0327 means
The knock sensor is a piezoelectric structure-borne sound sensor bolted to the engine block; the module evaluates its signal per cylinder and retards ignition when it detects knock.
How the engine computer detects it
Sensor A is the first sensor (bank 1 or a single sensor). With a fault the module retards ignition across the board as protection – noticeable loss of power and higher consumption. P0327 means the diagnostic DC voltage at the sensor input is too low – the signal or return wire is shorted to ground. GM biases each input through a resistor network and sets the code below 8 % of 5 V in 50 of 63 samples, in the first trip; Ford checks actively once every 250 engine cycles on modules with this circuit. Subaru introduced a more durable sensor for this fault.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Loss of power, sluggish response from ignition retard
- Higher fuel consumption
Common causes
- Signal or return wire chafed to ground Most likely
- Moisture or corrosion in connector or sensor Possible
- Sensor faulty internally (series issue on some models) Possible
- Engine module internal Less likely
How to diagnose P0327
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: knock sensor a, knock sensor wiring, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0327?
Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0327?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Can I fix P0327 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
