What P0323 means

P0323 stands for a speed and reference signal at the ignition input – today the crankshaft position sensor – that drops out or is disturbed for moments and then recovers.

How the engine computer detects it

None of the manufacturer documents available to us (GM 2014–2019, Ford 2012 and 2020–2023, Saab workshop information) uses P0323; the sporadic crank sensor check runs under P0339 at Ford and under P0336 at GM. Ford's logic shows what is evaluated: teeth missing or extra for a moment and the reference gap appearing at an unexpected position, after which the module briefly cuts fuel and spark and resynchronizes. Typical causes are a loose contact, chafed wiring and electrical interference. The code itself is described only by its J2012 name and CARB's monitoring requirement for crank angle sensors.

Symptoms

  • Brief stumbling or stalling, then normal again
  • Sporadic misfire
  • Tachometer flickers
  • Check engine light on

Common causes

  1. Loose contact or corrosion at the sensor connector Most likely
  2. Chafed wiring, break under vibration Possible
  3. Sensor dropping out when hot Possible
  4. Interference from neighbouring wires Less likely

How to diagnose P0323

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft tone wheel, sensor wiring, engine control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0323?

Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0323?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P0323 clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.

Can I fix P0323 myself?

Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
