What P025A means
On demand-controlled fuel systems the engine module does not drive the pump itself but sends a pump control module the desired pump output on a separate control line, usually as a duty cycle; the module reports back on a monitor line or via CAN.
How the engine computer detects it
P025A means the control line from the engine module to pump module A is open or faulty. On Ford systems the pump module itself detects the bad command signal and reports it on the monitor line (11–16 V, 2–5 s); Ford uses P025A for the shared line to modules A and B. GM's pump module compares the enable line with the request on the data bus and sets P025A after about 1 s, with the warning light in the first trip; on some Ford vehicles the code does not light it.

Symptoms
- Check engine light (manufacturer-dependent)
- Hard or no start
- Rough idle, surging
- Lack of power from wrong fuel pressure
Common causes
- Control line to the pump module open or shorted, often along the frame Most likely
- Connector at the pump module corroded or wet (module often mounted on the frame) Most likely
- Pump control module faulty (input) Possible
- Module ground or supply poor Possible
- Engine module output faulty Less likely
How to diagnose P025A
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: fuel pump control module a, fuel pump control wiring, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.
Reading the code
- P
- Powertrain
- 0
- Generic (SAE) code
- 2
- Fuel and air metering (injector circuit)
- 5A
- Specific fault
Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P025A?
Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P025A?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
