What P0217 means
The engine is overheating: the computer has seen the coolant get hotter than its safety limit. To protect the engine it may cut power or switch off the air conditioning. Low coolant from a leak is the most common cause, followed by a thermostat stuck closed or a cooling fan that doesn't run.
How the engine computer detects it
P0217 is a condition code: the engine module reports that coolant temperature has passed a protection threshold. The limit and the reaction depend on the manufacturer – Saab's 2.2 diesel sets it at 120 °C (248 °F) for over 10 s, limits fuel quantity and suspends EGR and boost diagnostics until the temperature drops; heavy-duty diesels cut power sharply and may shut down; Ford gasoline engines use their own code P1299 and cut fuel to individual cylinders. Whether the warning light comes on varies, because CARB exempts overheat protection that only engages once the gauge reads red. Usual causes are low coolant, a thermostat stuck closed, a failed fan or water pump – but Ford traced some cases to a faulty coolant sensor or harness.

Symptoms
- Temperature gauge in the red, overheat warning
- Loss of power, limp mode, cylinders possibly shut off
- Air conditioning switches off
- Steam or coolant smell, coolant loss
Common causes
- Low coolant (leak, head gasket) Most likely
- Thermostat stuck closed Most likely
- Radiator fan, fan clutch or water pump faulty, radiator clogged Possible
- Coolant temperature sensor or harness faulty (false reading) Possible
- Extreme load (towing, gradient, heat) with an intact cooling system Less likely
How to diagnose P0217
- Wait until the engine is completely cold, then check the coolant level in the reservoir. If it's low, look for wet spots, drips or white crust on hoses, the radiator and under the car.
- Look for signs of a head gasket problem: white exhaust smoke with a sweet smell, coolant loss with no visible leak, or milky oil on the dipstick. A shop can test the coolant for exhaust gases.
- With the coolant full, start the engine, turn the A/C on and watch the gauge. If it climbs toward hot, switch the engine off right away. Check that the radiator fans spin; if not, check the fan fuse and relay. Keep hands clear: on some cars the fan can start on its own.
- If the coolant is full and the fans work, have a shop pressure-test the cooling system and check the thermostat, water pump and radiator.
- If the engine never actually seemed hot (normal gauge, no steam), a faulty coolant temperature sensor or its wiring can give a false reading. Rule out real overheating first.
- If the engine overheated badly, have it checked for head gasket and cylinder head damage before driving it regularly again.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0217 (42 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0217?
No. Pull over as soon as it's safe and switch the engine off. Never open the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot: the coolant is under pressure and can burn you badly. Have the car towed rather than driving on, especially if the warning returns after a restart.
