What P010C means

Sensor B is a second mass air flow sensor in a second intake path, found on engines with two air filter boxes – for example the Nissan VR30DDTT twin-turbo V6 (where sensor B belongs to bank 2) or GM's 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6.

How the engine computer detects it

P010C means the signal of sensor B is below its electrical lower limit – the counterpart of P0102. GM's twin-turbo V6 sets it at 400 Hz or less (300 failed out of 375 samples, two trips); Ford's digital sensor B below 1.5 kHz for 5 s. The usual causes are an open or grounded signal wire, a corroded connector, missing supply or failed sensor electronics. The engine continues with a calculated substitute value.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Lack of power, substitute value mode
  • Rough idle, hesitation

Common causes

  1. Signal wire of sensor B open or grounded, connector corroded Most likely
  2. Sensor B electronics failed Most likely
  3. Supply or ground of sensor B faulty Possible
  4. Control module input faulty Less likely

How to diagnose P010C

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: mass air flow sensor b, mass air flow sensor wiring, sensor supply voltage.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P010C?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P010C?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P010C clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.

Can I fix P010C myself?

Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: easy. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
