What P0102 means

The mass air flow sensor (MAF) sits between the air filter and the throttle or compressor and measures how much air the engine draws in; fuel quantity, load and ignition are calculated from it.

How the engine computer detects it

Most are hot-film or hot-wire sensors that output either a voltage or, on GM, Saab and newer Ford systems, a frequency. P0102 means the signal is below its electrical lower limit – a frequency that is too low or a voltage that is too low. Documented limits: GM gasoline 450 Hz or less, GM diesel below 276 Hz, Ford digital below 1.5 kHz for 5 s, Ford analogue below 0.244 V. 'Low' describes the signal: typically an open or grounded signal wire, missing supply voltage or failed electronics. Saab notes that a large leak between sensor and throttle can also cause it. GM and Saab need two trips; the engine runs on a calculated substitute value.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Lack of power, hesitation, substitute value mode
  • Rough idle or stalling
  • Higher fuel consumption

Common causes

  1. Signal wire open or shorted to ground, connector corroded or loose Most likely
  2. Sensor electronics failed Most likely
  3. Missing supply voltage (fuse, relay) or poor ground Possible
  4. Large leak or disconnected duct between sensor and throttle Less likely

How to diagnose P0102

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: mass air flow sensor, mass air flow sensor wiring, sensor supply voltage.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0102?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0102?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P0102 clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.

Can I fix P0102 myself?

Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: easy. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.

Often reported together

Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P0102. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
