What U3000 means

One of the car's control modules has reported an internal fault. U3000 is a general code, so what it means depends on which module set it, from the radio to the body control module.

How the engine computer detects it

Generic fault on the control module itself — internal self-diagnostic flagged a problem with computation, memory, drivers or other internal subsystems.

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

Common causes

  1. Module internal fault Most likely
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly Less likely
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec Less likely

How to diagnose U3000

  1. Use a scanner that reads all modules to find out which one stored U3000, and note any extra characters after the code.
  2. Check battery voltage and the battery terminals. Low voltage causes many network and module codes.
  3. Look for software updates and service bulletins for that module.
  4. If the module keeps setting the code after an update, it may need replacing and programming.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention U3000 (237 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code U3000?

It depends on the module. If only accessories act up, you can usually drive. If warning lights pile up or the car runs badly, go straight to a shop.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with U3000?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Often reported together

Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as U3000. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
