What U0415 means
Another computer in the car is getting data from the ABS module that doesn't make sense, such as impossible wheel speeds. Unlike a lost-communication code, the ABS module is still talking; what it sends is wrong. A failing wheel speed sensor or a fault inside the ABS module is the usual cause.
How the engine computer detects it
A control module is communicating with the ABS module but receives implausible data — wrong wheel speeds, checksum errors or out-of-range values. ESP/ESC and traction control deactivate and adaptive cruise control becomes unavailable.

Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
Common causes
- ABS internal sensor or processing fault Possible
- Wheel speed sensor fault feeding ABS Possible
- ABS software bug or outdated calibration Less likely
How to diagnose U0415
- Read the ABS module codes with a scanner that supports ABS. A basic code reader only shows engine codes, and a wheel speed sensor code in the ABS module tells you where to look.
- Check battery voltage and the battery terminals. Low voltage can make modules send bad data.
- With a scanner, compare all four wheel speeds while someone drives slowly in a straight line. A wheel that reads zero, drops out or differs from the others points to that sensor or its wiring.
- Inspect the wheel speed sensor wiring at each wheel for damage, especially after brake, wheel bearing or suspension work.
- Check for software updates and service bulletins for the ABS module. If everything else checks out, the module may need reprogramming or replacing.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention U0415 (42 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code U0415?
Usually yes, carefully. Normal braking should still work, but stability and traction control may be off and ABS may not work, so leave extra room and take it easy on wet or icy roads. If the red brake warning light is on or the pedal feels different, don't drive: have it towed.
