What U0121 means
The car's other computers have stopped hearing from the ABS module, the unit that runs the anti-lock brakes. ABS, traction and stability control usually switch off, and on some cars the speedometer and cruise control stop working too. Lost power or a corroded ground at the ABS module is the most common cause.
How the engine computer detects it
The CAN messages from the ABS module are missing. ABS, ESP/ESC and traction control all become inactive (warning lamps illuminate), the speedometer may go to zero on cars that derive vehicle speed from the ABS module, and adaptive cruise control is disabled.

Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
Common causes
- ABS module unpowered (often a corroded ground or fuse) Most likely
- CAN wiring to ABS broken Possible
- ABS module failed Possible
How to diagnose U0121
- Check battery voltage and the battery terminals. A weak battery or loose terminal can make modules drop off the network.
- Check the ABS fuses in the fuse box. Many cars have separate fuses for the ABS pump and the module.
- With the ignition off, inspect the ABS module connector and its ground connection for corrosion. The unit sits near the brake lines, where water and road salt can reach it.
- Use a scanner that can talk to the ABS module; a basic code reader can't. If even a good scanner can't reach it, a shop checks power, ground and the network wires at the module connector.
- If power, ground and wiring are good, the ABS module has likely failed. A replacement often needs programming, and the brakes may need bleeding with a scanner.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention U0121 (42 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code U0121?
Usually yes, carefully: your normal brakes should still work, but without ABS the wheels can lock in a hard stop, so leave extra distance. If the speedometer stops working, go only as far as a shop. If the red brake warning light is on or the pedal feels different, don't drive: have it towed.
