What P2111 means
The electronic throttle is stuck more open than the computer is asking for. To keep you safe, the car will cut power and go into a reduced-power mode. Carbon buildup or a failing throttle body is the usual cause.
How the engine computer detects it
The throttle plate cannot be commanded back to the closed/idle position. Idle speed runs high or the engine cannot decelerate properly — safety-critical fault that usually triggers immediate limp mode.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
- Hesitation or surging
- Idle too high or too low
Common causes
- Throttle plate seized open Most likely
- Return spring broken Possible
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement Less likely
How to diagnose P2111
- Check for other throttle and pedal codes, such as P2112, P2135 or P2138. They help narrow it down.
- With the ignition off, remove the intake boot and look at the throttle plate. Clean heavy carbon with throttle body cleaner, without forcing the plate.
- Check the throttle body connector for corrosion or bent pins.
- If the plate sticks or the code returns, replace the throttle body. Many cars need a throttle relearn with a scanner afterwards.
- Look up recalls and service bulletins for your vehicle. Several makes have had throttle body campaigns.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P2111 (389 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P2111?
Only to get off the road safely. The engine may limit speed, idle high or not respond to the pedal. Get it towed or driven a short distance to a shop.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P2111?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P2111 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
Can I fix P2111 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
