What P2101 means
The electronic throttle motor is getting its commands, but the throttle plate isn't moving to where the computer tells it to. Since the computer can no longer control engine power precisely, it usually puts the car in reduced-power mode. A carbon-coated, sticking throttle plate or a worn throttle motor are the usual causes.
How the engine computer detects it
The throttle motor responds, but its actual position does not track the commanded position within tolerance. Often a dirty throttle bore where the plate sticks, or a worn motor.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
- Hesitation or surging
- Idle too high or too low
Common causes
- Throttle bore coked, plate sticks Most likely
- Throttle motor worn Possible
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window Less likely
How to diagnose P2101
- Check for other codes. Throttle position sensor codes or low-voltage codes change where to look first.
- Check battery voltage and the battery terminals. The throttle motor needs steady voltage, and a weak battery or poor ground can set this code.
- With the ignition off, inspect the throttle body connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins or chafing.
- With the ignition off, remove the intake boot and clean carbon from the throttle plate and bore. Don't force or pry the plate.
- A shop can compare commanded and actual throttle position on a scanner. If the actual position still lags or jumps after cleaning, replace the throttle body and run the throttle relearn.
Vehicles that report P2101 most

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P2101 (33 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P2101?
Drive only to a safe place or a nearby shop. In reduced-power mode the car may barely accelerate or the idle may surge, which is risky when merging or crossing traffic. If the engine stalls or doesn't respond to the pedal, have it towed.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P2101?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Often reported together
Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P2101. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
