What P0A3F means
The rotor position of a traction motor is read by a resolver: one excitation coil and two pickup coils that return sine and cosine signals.
How the engine computer detects it
P0A3F is the basic circuit code for motor A and mostly means the signal is gone. GM sets it when the sine or cosine amplitude drops below 2.3 V (Type A, one trip in the 2011 and 2016 tables); Mitsubishi (2023 Outlander PHEV front motor) watches the excitation voltage and fails it outside 1.0 to 2.86 V for 0.14 s. Field causes: a spread terminal at the X2 connector of the Chevrolet Bolt, low 12 V supply on the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid (software fix), Stellantis Pacifica Hybrid. P0A40 covers a degraded signal. Expect lost propulsion or no electric drive.

Symptoms
- Sudden loss of propulsion, sometimes normal again after a restart
- MIL and hybrid/EV system warning on
- Vehicle will not enter ready mode or electric drive is disabled
Common causes
- Spread or poorly seated terminal at the resolver connector (documented on the Chevrolet Bolt) Most likely
- Open or shorted excitation, sine or cosine wire between motor and inverter Possible
- Low 12 V auxiliary battery voltage disturbing the motor control module (Subaru, fixed by reprogramming) Possible
- Resolver coil failed inside the motor Less likely
- Faulty resolver excitation or input stage in the inverter/motor control module Less likely
How to diagnose P0A3F
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: drive motor a position sensor, wiring harness, hybrid control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0A3F (8 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0A3F?
If the car drives normally, drive gently to a shop that services hybrids. If it shows a hybrid system warning, loses power or won't go into Ready, pull over and have it towed. Never touch orange high-voltage cables.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0A3F?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
