What P090D means
Set when the control circuit of the clutch B actuator shows a high state, i.e. a motor or control line is shorted to battery voltage.
How the engine computer detects it
Ford documents P090D as the short-to-power check of the clutch B motor in the DPS6 PowerShift transmission of the Fiesta and Focus. Ford customer satisfaction program 20B23, covering some 2016-2017 Focus cars, names P090D together with P0900 and several hall and driver codes as signs of failed clutch actuator motors, with erratic shifting, vibration and a lit check engine light; dealers replaced both motors. P090A and P090C are the open and ground faults of the same circuit, P0903 the clutch A equivalent. CARB requires circuit checks on such transmission outputs.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Erratic or missed shifts and vibration
- Limp mode, possibly no drive
Common causes
- Failed clutch B actuator motor (Ford program 20B23) Most likely
- Motor or control wire shorted to a supply line Possible
- Faulty motor driver in the TCM Less likely
How to diagnose P090D
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: clutch b actuator, wiring harness, tcm.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P090D?
If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P090D?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
