What P090B means

Set when the clutch B actuator circuit is electrically connected but the actuator does not respond as commanded, for example too slowly or with an unexpected current draw.

How the engine computer detects it

Ford uses P090B on the DPS6 PowerShift transmission. Trade guidance for this transmission starts with a visual check of the harness from the TCM to the clutch B motor, then swaps the two identical clutch motors: if the code becomes P0901, the motor with its built-in position sensor is faulty; if P090B stays, the circuit or TCM needs pinpoint testing. Ford's TCM program 14M02 for 2011-2015 Fiesta and Focus also lists P090B as a code where the TCM itself can be the cause. P090A, P090C and P090D are the pure circuit faults of clutch B.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Shudder or slipping in even gears and reverse
  • Delayed or missed shifts, possible limp mode

Common causes

  1. Worn or sluggish clutch B actuator motor Most likely
  2. TCM fault (Ford program 14M02 lists this code) Possible
  3. Damaged harness between TCM and clutch B motor Possible

How to diagnose P090B

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: clutch b actuator, wiring harness, tcm.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P090B?

If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P090B?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P090B clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
