What P0884 means

The TCM power input codes watch the supply voltage of the transmission module or of its solenoid supply.

How the engine computer detects it

Without a proper supply all solenoids go dead and the transmission falls back to its hydraulic emergency gear with maximum line pressure: a fixed gear, harsh engagement, no shifting. Ford's external transmission modules check a window of 9 to 16 V; GM reports the same under P0562/P0563. P0884 reports a brief loss of supply. Chrysler calls it 'power up at speed': the module notices on start-up that the vehicle is already moving, so it must have rebooted while driving. In field reports from NHTSA investigation PE07-027 on 2007 Jeeps it was stored after engine stalls, among others from an unlatched fuse box connector.

Symptoms

  • Transmission jerks or briefly enters limp mode while driving
  • Engine may stall with a combined powertrain module
  • Warning lamps flicker

Common causes

  1. Loose or unlatched connector at fuse box or module Most likely
  2. Ignition switch or relay with contact dropouts Possible
  3. Battery terminal or ground loose Possible
  4. Internal module reset Less likely

How to diagnose P0884

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: transmission control module, transmission relay, battery, module wiring.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0884 (12 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0884?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0884?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P0884 clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.

Often reported together

Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P0884. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
