What P0783 means
Shift codes are a functional check of the gear change itself: the module compares the commanded shift with the speed trace and flags a shift that takes too long, is too short or abrupt, does not happen, flares or ties up.
How the engine computer detects it
Ford does not use P0780–P0784 (its shift completion check feeds the solenoid codes), nor do GM's 2018–2025 tables. P0783 names the 3–4 shift as the faulty one, up or down; slip in a steady gear is reported by the ratio codes instead. No manufacturer document available to us uses this code; GM's Honda-built five-speed checks exactly the 3–4 change, but reports it as P0780. Missing or late fourth gear and flare on the 3–4 shift are typical.

Symptoms
- Harsh, delayed or missing 3-4 shift
- Engine flare during the shift
- Warning lamp
- Limp mode
Common causes
- Fluid level wrong, fluid worn or contaminated Most likely
- Valve body, shift or pressure valve sticking Most likely
- Worn clutches or bands Possible
- Module software or shift adaption Possible
- Faulty speed sensor signal Less likely
How to diagnose P0783
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: transmission valve body, shift solenoid, transmission clutches, transmission control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0783 (4 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0783?
If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0783?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
