What P076F means
P076F means the ratio in seventh gear is wrong: input speed divided by output speed does not match the commanded gear, so a clutch slips or another gear is engaged.
How the engine computer detects it
It only exists on transmissions with seven or more gears. Ford's 10-speed 10R80 and 10R140 list it in bulletins together with the other ratio codes and the check engine light – causes include a migrating sleeve on a clutch cylinder causing hydraulic leaks and sticking valve body valves. Ford's ratio check elsewhere flags more than 30 rpm off for 1.8 s three times. On GM's Corvette with seven-speed manual transmission, P076F is a plausibility check of the gear position sensor instead (ratio window 0.41–0.50), after one trip.

Symptoms
- Slipping or flaring engine speed in seventh gear
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Check engine light, transmission warning, possibly limp mode
Common causes
- Hydraulic leak at the seventh gear clutch (Ford 10R80: clutch cylinder sleeve) Most likely
- Sticking valves in the valve body or solenoid Possible
- Fluid level or condition Possible
- Gear position sensor implausible or not learned (GM manual only) Possible
- Turbine or output speed sensor Less likely
How to diagnose P076F
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: transmission clutches, transmission valve body, transmission fluid, transmission control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P076F (10 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P076F?
If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P076F?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Often reported together
Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P076F. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
