What P0725 means
The transmission module needs engine speed for converter slip, shift quality and to check the turbine speed.
How the engine computer detects it
Today it almost always arrives over CAN from the engine module with a validity flag; only GM's 2007 Allison 1000 tables show a separate engine speed sensor read by the transmission module. P0725 is the general fault of this input; with CAN it means the engine module marks its speed value as invalid. Saab's Aisin transmissions and a 2006 GM table set it after about 4 s, the GM table with immediate MIL. A Saab bulletin notes that behind P0725 there is always a crankshaft or camshaft sensor code in the engine module (P0016, P0335–P0339) – so read the engine module first. Limp mode follows; a completely missing CAN message is U0100.

Symptoms
- Transmission warning lamp, possibly check engine light
- Torque converter clutch locked out
- Harsh shifts or limp mode
- Often an engine code (crankshaft sensor) as well
Common causes
- Crankshaft or camshaft sensor fault in the engine module (speed invalid there) Most likely
- CAN fault between engine and transmission module (wiring, termination, connector) Possible
- Engine module software or fault Less likely
- Transmission module faulty Less likely
How to diagnose P0725
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: engine speed signal, can bus, transmission control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.
Vehicles that report P0725 most
| Vehicle | Years | Reports | Share | Median miles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan Altima | 2003–2006 | 14 | 68k | |
| Nissan Rogue | 2010–2015 | 3 | — |
Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0725 (23 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0725?
Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0725?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Can I fix P0725 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
Often reported together
Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P0725. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
