What P0714 means

The transmission fluid temperature sensor is an NTC thermistor whose resistance falls as the fluid warms; the module feeds it with 5 V through a resistor.

How the engine computer detects it

A low signal therefore means very hot or a short to ground, a high signal very cold or an open circuit. P0714 means the signal drops out or jumps briefly – not long enough for P0712 or P0713. Ford's 2012 6R80 transmission names P0714 among its fluid temperature checks for open, short and in-range faults. Ram 6.7 bulletins of 2013 changed P0711–P0714 from a one-trip to a two-trip MIL to avoid needless warnings. GM files such jumps under P0711 instead. No source publishes thresholds for P0714 itself. A loose contact in the transmission connector or a chafing internal harness is the usual cause.

Symptoms

  • Harsh shifts at times
  • Jumping fluid temperature display
  • Check engine or transmission lamp depending on manufacturer

Common causes

  1. Loose contact in transmission connector (oil, corrosion, spread pins) Most likely
  2. Internal harness chafing from movement or vibration Possible
  3. Sensor with internal contact fault Possible
  4. Module software (false warning) Less likely

How to diagnose P0714

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: transmission fluid temperature sensor, transmission internal harness, transmission control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0714?

If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.

Will P0714 clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
