What P0715 means

The input or turbine shaft speed sensor – a Hall sensor with square-wave output or an inductive sensor with sine output – reports the speed behind the torque converter.

How the engine computer detects it

With output and engine speed it gives the actual gear ratio, converter slip and shift timing. P0715 is the general circuit code. Ford uses it for 'no signal' too: the vehicle is moving under power (engine above converter stall speed, output speed plausible) but the sensor reports under 200 rpm for 5–30 s; Ford's DPS6 dual-clutch sets it for a hardware-detected fault of input shaft sensor 1. Subaru-based systems flag an open or shorted circuit, Saab's Aisin box no input signal while the output sensor works, substituting output speed. GM does not use P0715. Limp mode, harsh shifts and a disabled converter clutch follow.

Symptoms

  • Check engine and/or transmission warning lamp
  • Limp mode with fixed gear, harsh shifts
  • Torque converter clutch does not apply
  • Input speed shows 0 or implausible in the scan tool

Common causes

  1. Speed sensor faulty (Hall IC or coil open or shorted) Most likely
  2. Connector or harness corroded, chafed or loose pins (with internal sensors also the pass-through connector) Most likely
  3. Metal debris on the sensor magnet or damaged reluctor wheel Possible
  4. Transmission module or its sensor supply faulty Less likely

How to diagnose P0715

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: input speed sensor, sensor wiring, transmission control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0715 (29 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0715?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0715?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Can I fix P0715 myself?

Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.

Often reported together

Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P0715. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
