What P0607 means

P0607 is the general 'module not working correctly' code, used when no specific memory or processor part is named.

How the engine computer detects it

Ford sets it for wrong instruction execution or too many processor resets in engine and transmission modules; the Ford diesel after five communication errors with its monitoring chip within 20 s (a complete loss of that link is P0600). GM introduced it in the engine module only recently: the 2025 tables evaluate the results of built-in self-tests and error-correction counters, with the lamp in the first trip. Resets can cause brief stumbling or stalling, and some systems switch to limp mode. Software updates fixed it on the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.9 V6 and Ram 6.7 Cummins, so check bulletins first. The code alone does not say which module set it – the scan tool shows whether it is the engine, transmission, brake or body module.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Limp mode or reduced power
  • Brief stumbling or stalling (module reset)
  • Several implausible codes at once

Common causes

  1. Faulty module software (update available) Most likely
  2. Internal module defect (processor, clock, monitoring chip) Possible
  3. Low voltage, voltage dips or a poor ground or supply at the module Possible
  4. Electrical interference, e.g. from a faulty alternator or ignition Less likely

How to diagnose P0607

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: engine control module, control module power supply, control module ground.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Vehicles that report P0607 most

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0607 (31 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0607?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0607?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
