What P0524 means
P0524 is not a sensor fault but a condition: the measured oil pressure is below a minimum depending on speed, load and temperature (Ford diesel 30–90 kPa (4–13 psi)) for about 5 s, with the sensor itself plausible.
How the engine computer detects it
Its purpose is engine protection; Ford gasoline engines with mid-lock cam phasers drive them into the locked position. GM's tables do not use it; FCA updated the Ram EcoDiesel software against false setting in the cold. Stop the engine, check the oil level and confirm with a mechanical gauge.

Symptoms
- Oil pressure warning and/or check engine light
- Engine noise (lifters, timing chain)
- Possible power reduction
Common causes
- Oil level too low, oil loss or consumption Most likely
- Too thin oil, fuel dilution or clogged pick-up screen Possible
- Oil pump or pressure control valve faulty or stuck Possible
- Worn crankshaft or camshaft bearings Less likely
- False setting by software in the cold (Ram EcoDiesel) Less likely
How to diagnose P0524
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: oil pump, oil pressure sensor, engine lubrication, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0524?
No. Pull over as soon as it's safe and switch the engine off: without oil pressure the engine can be destroyed within minutes. Check the oil level once it has settled. If it's low, top it up; if the level is fine or the warning stays on, have the car towed.
Often reported together
Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P0524. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
