What P0483 means
Two kinds of cooling fan carry these codes: electric fans switched by relays or driven by a PWM/LIN fan module with speed feedback, and engine-driven fans with an electronically controlled viscous clutch, whose speed a Hall sensor reports – GM calls them EV fans, meaning electro-viscous, not electric vehicle.
How the engine computer detects it
P0483 checks the fan's function, not its circuit. With a speed sensor (GM viscous fans) commanded and actual speed are compared: GM's Duramax diesels of 2014–18 set it at more than ±500 rpm for at least 120 s, GM gasoline SUVs and pick-ups of 2004–06 at more than 1000 rpm – MIL after two trips. Without a sensor Subaru (and the Saab 9-2X) judges indirectly: if coolant at 100 °C (212 °F) or more does not fall within 5 minutes at idle with the fan on, the code sets after two trips. Ford's OBD summaries do not contain it.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on (after two trips)
- Constant fan roar, or temperature rise at standstill
- Air conditioning weak at low speed
Common causes
- Viscous clutch worn or leaking, or its solenoid faulty – fan does not reach or leave target speed Most likely
- Electric fan motor stiff or worn, or fan blocked Possible
- Fan speed sensor or wiring giving a wrong value Possible
- Radiator or condenser clogged, coolant low (Subaru logic) Less likely
- Drive belt slipping (belt-driven viscous fan) Less likely
How to diagnose P0483
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: cooling fan, fan clutch, fan speed sensor, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0483?
Carefully, and keep an eye on the temperature gauge. Without a working fan the engine can overheat in traffic or at idle. If the gauge climbs toward hot, pull over and switch the engine off.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0483?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P0483 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
Can I fix P0483 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
