What P0482 means

The engine module switches cooling fan stages through relays, pulling each relay coil to ground.

How the engine computer detects it

P0482 concerns the control circuit of the third stage or relay: with the driver off the line should sit at battery voltage through the coil, and the internal pull-up level means an open circuit (Saab ME9: more than 1 s, 10–18 V, engine running). On the GM-based Saab 9-5 of 2011 it is relay 3 (medium stage) of a two-fan network, with shorts reported as P0695/P0696. GM tables list P0482 only in fault groups; Ford's OBD summaries do not contain it. One fan stage then fails.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • One fan stage fails – temperature rises in traffic or when towing
  • Air conditioning weaker at standstill

Common causes

  1. Fan relay 3 faulty (coil open) or not seated properly Most likely
  2. Control wire open or high-resistance, corroded or backed-out pins Most likely
  3. Relay coil supply missing (fuse, supply wire) Possible
  4. Driver in the engine module Less likely

How to diagnose P0482

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: cooling fan relay 3, fan relay wiring, engine control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0482?

Carefully, and keep an eye on the temperature gauge. Without a working fan the engine can overheat in traffic or at idle. If the gauge climbs toward hot, pull over and switch the engine off.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0482?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P0482 clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.

Can I fix P0482 myself?

Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
