What P0462 means
The fuel level sensor is a float on a resistor track in the tank unit.
How the engine computer detects it
It is no emission part, but other monitors depend on it – the EVAP leak tests, for example, need at least 15 % fuel – so CARB requires it to be monitored and the usual exemption from the warning lamp does not apply. Low and high refer to the signal, not the fuel level: on GM a full tank is about 40 Ω and a low voltage, while Ford judges the resistance directly. P0462 means the signal is below its lower limit: GM below 10 % of the 5 V reference (100 of 125 samples, MIL after two trips), Saab 9-4X below 0.25 V for 5 s, Ford a resistance below 5 Ω for 30 s. Typical is a signal wire shorted to ground or a shorted sensor. The gauge sticks at one end and a substitute value is used.

Symptoms
- Fuel gauge wrong, stuck or jumping
- Range display and low-fuel warning wrong
- Check engine light (depending on the maker)
Common causes
- Signal wire shorted to ground (chafed at tank or underbody) Most likely
- Sensor shorted or damaged internally Possible
- Water or corrosion in the tank connector Possible
- Evaluating module faulty Less likely
How to diagnose P0462
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: fuel level sensor a, fuel tank unit, sensor wiring, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0462 (21 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0462?
Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0462?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P0462 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
