What P0461 means
The fuel level sensor is a float on a resistor track in the tank unit.
How the engine computer detects it
It is no emission part, but other monitors depend on it – the EVAP leak tests, for example, need at least 15 % fuel – so CARB requires it to be monitored and the usual exemption from the warning lamp does not apply. P0461 is the plausibility check of sensor A within its valid signal range. GM compares the level change with calculated fuel use: less than 3 l change after 22 l (2018) or 38.2 l (2016) consumed sets the code, MIL after two trips. Ford reads it differently, as a noisy signal with jumps above 40 %. On the Saab 9-4X the gauge then drops to empty and the low-fuel lamp comes on. A GM bulletin names overfilling and frequent topping up as a false trigger.

Symptoms
- Fuel gauge wrong, stuck or jumping
- Range display and low-fuel warning wrong
- Check engine light (depending on the maker)
Common causes
- Resistor track or wiper worn or dirty (sulphur deposits), arm sticking Most likely
- Float deformed or soaked, or tank deformed Possible
- Overfilling or frequent topping up (no defect) Possible
- Contact resistance at connectors (occasional jumps) Less likely
How to diagnose P0461
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: fuel level sensor a, fuel tank unit, sensor wiring, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0461?
Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0461?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P0461 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
