What P0454 means
The evaporative emission (EVAP) system stores fuel vapour from the tank in a charcoal canister; a purge valve lets the engine draw it off, and a vent valve opens the canister to fresh air.
How the engine computer detects it
The tank pressure sensor measures small pressures around ambient for the leak tests. Its direction differs by maker – on GM vacuum raises the voltage, on Ford and Bosch pressure does – so low and high refer to the signal voltage only. P0454 means the signal jumps. Ford checks continuously for a jump above about 1 kPa (0.1 psi) between two samples 100 ms apart or a brief open or short. GM (and the Saab 9-4X) checks only during the engine-off leak test: a jump of about 112 Pa within 1 s that refuelling cannot explain, 2 of 3 tests, MIL on the first trip. Saab's ME9 does not use the code. The engine-off small-leak test is then discarded.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- EVAP readiness not set, emission inspection not passed
- No change in driving
Common causes
- Loose contact at the connector to the tank pressure sensor Most likely
- Chafed harness at the tank Possible
- Sensor faulty internally (noisy signal) Possible
- Fuel sloshing in an overfilled tank or refuelling misdetected Less likely
How to diagnose P0454
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: fuel tank pressure sensor, sensor wiring, engine control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0454?
Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0454?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Can I fix P0454 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
