What P0349 means

P0349 is the bank 2 counterpart of P0344: the signal of the intake camshaft sensor on the side without cylinder 1 is disturbed for moments – edges are missing or appear at an unexpected angle.

How the engine computer detects it

Ford checks this on the five-tooth wheel used with variable cam timing; if edges appear where none are expected, Ford sets P0349 and switches cam timing on bank 2 off, from 200 rpm, detected within 5 s. FCA also uses the code and asks for the cam/crank synchronization event data to be saved before the sensor is replaced, because a disturbed crank reference can look like a cam fault. GM does not use P0349. Typical causes are a loose contact at the bank 2 connector, a sensor dropping out when hot or soaked with oil moisture, and a damaged tone wheel.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Sporadic loss of power (cam timing off)
  • Rough running
  • Occasionally longer cranking

Common causes

  1. Loose contact or corrosion at the bank 2 connector Most likely
  2. Sensor dropping out when hot or due to oil moisture Possible
  3. Tone wheel of bank 2 damaged Possible
  4. Interference or chafed wiring Less likely

How to diagnose P0349

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: camshaft position sensor, camshaft tone wheel, sensor wiring, engine control module, cam phaser intake bank2.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0349?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0349?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Can I fix P0349 myself?

Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
