What P0236 means
Boost sensor A measures the absolute pressure between charge air cooler and throttle – GM calls it TIAP, Ford TIP – usually combined with an intake air temperature sensor; its voltage rises with pressure.
How the engine computer detects it
With the ignition on and the engine stopped it must read the same as manifold and barometric pressure. P0236 is the plausibility fault: the signal is electrically valid but wrong. After a stop of at least 10 s boost, manifold and barometric pressure must match (Ford within about 7–9 kPa (1.0–1.3 psi)); while running, GM compares the sensor with models from airflow, manifold pressure and throttle and flags deviations such as more than 30 kPa (4.4 psi) from manifold pressure – with the warning light in the first trip. A charge air leak often triggers it too, because the model comparison drifts apart. VW traced a Tiguan case to contact resistance in a harness connector. With a sensor fault boost control is switched off and only the base boost of the wastegate spring remains, with a clear loss of power.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Loss of power, only base boost
- Hissing or whistling with a leak
Common causes
- Charge air leak (hose, clamp, cooler) between turbo and throttle Most likely
- Boost sensor dirty, oily or drifting Most likely
- Contact resistance in connector or harness Possible
- Manifold or barometric sensor faulty (correlation partner) Possible
- Ice or condensate in the charge air cooler in cold weather Less likely
How to diagnose P0236
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: boost pressure sensor a, sensor wiring, charge air hoses.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0236 (10 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0236?
Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0236?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Can I fix P0236 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: easy. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
Often reported together
Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P0236. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
