What P0234 means
P0234 is a function code, not a sensor fault: the engine module compares target and actual boost, and actual boost stays above target although the control is already lowering it (wastegate opened, variable vanes opened).
How the engine computer detects it
GM gasoline engines set it at 20–35 kPa (2.9–5.1 psi) over target with the warning light in the first trip; GM diesels with variable vanes at 7–10 kPa (1.0–1.5 psi), after two trips; Ford EcoBoost at about 28 kPa (4.1 psi) (4 psi) over 5 s while the wastegate is already commanded fully open. Ford diesels instead use P0234 for exhaust back pressure above 4.0–4.5 bar (58–65 psi). The engine limits boost or enters limp mode. Typical causes are a wastegate stuck closed, sooted variable vanes or a faulty control valve; Audi traced cases on the Q7 TDI to cracked exhaust parts jamming the turbo vanes. Check the boost sensor against barometric pressure first.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Limp mode with clear loss of power
- Boost overshoots on acceleration, then power drops
- Knocking under full load (gasoline) or smoke (diesel)
Common causes
- Wastegate stuck closed, actuator or linkage sticking, control hose off or blocked Most likely
- Variable turbine vanes sooted or stuck closed (diesel) Most likely
- Boost control valve or electric actuator faulty Possible
- Boost or manifold sensor reading too high (drift) Possible
- Software or calibration, tuning Less likely
How to diagnose P0234
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: turbocharger, wastegate, variable geometry vanes, boost control valve.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

| Ford Escape | 2013–2020 | 9 | 99k |
Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0234 (19 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0234?
Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0234?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
