What P0089 means
On direct-injection gasoline engines and diesels, a high-pressure pump feeds the fuel rail and a regulator valve controls how much pressure builds up. The computer sees that this regulator isn't controlling pressure properly. A sticking or worn regulator valve, often part of the high-pressure pump, is the most common cause.
How the engine computer detects it
On common-rail diesel and gasoline direct-injection engines, a high-pressure pump feeds the fuel rail, a sensor measures rail pressure, and the engine control module regulates it towards a target from its maps. The fuel pressure regulator A is the actuator the manufacturer designates for this: depending on the system a pressure control valve that releases fuel from the rail, or the control valve on the high-pressure pump. Some manufacturers report the pump valve under the "fuel volume regulator" codes instead. P0089 is a function check: pressure may still be plausible, but the regulator works at its limit, needs too much correction, or pressure does not follow its control signal. Typical causes are a sticking or worn regulator, a weak pump or a faulty pressure sensor.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Jerking or hesitation
- Loss of power, reduced power mode possible
Common causes
- Pressure regulator or pump control valve sticking or worn Most likely
- High-pressure pump weak Possible
- Rail pressure sensor faulty Possible
- Low-pressure supply too weak Possible
- Engine control software Less likely
How to diagnose P0089
- Check for other fuel pressure codes, such as P0087 (too low) or P0088 (too high). They show which way the pressure is off.
- Make sure the tank isn't nearly empty. On diesels, replace the fuel filter if it's due and drain any water from the filter housing.
- With the ignition off, inspect the connectors on the high-pressure pump, the regulator and the rail pressure sensor for corrosion or loose pins.
- A shop compares desired and actual rail pressure on a scanner and measures the low-pressure supply. A weak in-tank pump can look like a regulator fault.
- Check for service bulletins and recalls. Some engines have software updates or revised parts for this code.
- Leave work on high-pressure fuel parts to a shop: the system holds very high pressure even after the engine stops. The regulator is often replaced together with the pump.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0089 (33 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0089?
Drive only as far as needed, and gently. Poorly controlled fuel pressure can cause jerking, loss of power, reduced-power mode or even stalling, which is dangerous in traffic. If the engine stalls or loses power suddenly, have it towed.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0089?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P0089 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
